Voices of the American West

By Corinne Platt and Meredith Ogilby, foreword by William Kittredge

Denver, CO (12/1/2009)—After a chance reunion, co-authors Corinne Platt and Meredith Ogilby began a four-year journey to define the West through its people. As they met with the major players, they asked some essential questions of them such as: How has the West defined you? Where do you think the West is heading, and what is your role? Are you hopeful about the future of the West?

The answers to these questions address the different passions and opinions regarding a multitude of issues impacting the West. As the authors say, “These are conversations. They are not written essays, but moments of honest, thoughtful dialogue.” Accompanying each conversation is a photograph, taken by Ogilby, of each individual in his or her element, whether that be near a bale of hay, on a college campus, or among a herd of sheep.

Voices of the American West tackles such topics as education, immigration, ranching, alternative energy, wildlife habitat protection, oil and gas extraction, urban development, and water conservation. This collection features Terry Tempest Williams, Stewart Udall, Katie Lee, Dave Foreman, and many others.

Corinne Platt is a writer living in the old mining town of Ophir, Colorado. She was formerly an English teacher in Carbondale, Colorado, and is now a freelance writer and lecturer.

Meredith Ogilby is a freelance photographer and author whose images have been published extensively in Colorado. Her book A Life Well-Rooted: Women of Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley won the Caroline Bancroft History Award for the advancement of Colorado history.
